New event coming up … Funk Soul Immersive Party with @jake_nwogu
It’s going to be such fun!

Sunday 30th October 3-5pm at Sadler’s Wells.

Q : Is it a class or a party?
A : Both

Jake’s philosophy; ‘there is no right or wrong as long as you are enjoying yourself’ comes to life in a movement session like no other. Come and rock out, jam to some seriously funky music or chill and catch up with friends. This is a unique experience to move in a dance studio but with the chilled out fun atmosphere of a party. Come as yourself or dressed in an outrageous party outfit. But be prepared to be wearing a smile on your face when you leave.

This session is part movement class, part immersive theatre and part party. The emphasis is making sure you have fun therefore you can join in as little or as much as you choose.

Please note that this is a pilot event created and hosted by Jake Nwogu. Please bring an open heart, open mind and be ready to move & party. We definitely need some fun right now!

Meet Troupe member, Mover & Maker @jake_nwogu
Jake has had an eclectic career: from Ballet to Mocap to Stunts & more.
We asked Jake a few questions, here’s a snippet. To read the full Q&A visit link in bio.

Who are you & what do you do?
I’m Jake, a Movement Practitioner, single father & neurodivergent. I live on a very remote farm in Mid Wales and travel around a lot for work!

Tell us a little bit about your movement & performance passions.
I describe myself as a Movement Practitioner, this is because I have a very diverse skill set & I don’t fully identify myself as mainly one. I originally trained as a ballet dancer, but constantly kept retaining in different styles throughout my career including Contemporary Dance, Bboying (Breakin) & Popping. This diversification has led me to explore other movement-based practices like Martial Arts, Stage & Screen Combat, Stunt work and Creature Movement. At the moment I’m looking into training in choreography for film (both fight & dance) & also movement direction.

Tell us a little bit about your experience with Shapes in Motion.
One of my bucket list jobs I set out to achieve was Motion Capture when I graduated from college in the early 2000s. It was in its infancy back then & there were a number of false starts. Around 2016 I started seriously looking for ways into this sector & attended a number of courses including with @shapesinmotion What I liked about Sarah’s approach was it was more movement focused, which coming from a dance background resonated with me. I was invited to join the Troupe in 2019. I love the community of like-minded people Shapes in Motion has attracted & how everyone brings different skills to the table & their willingness to share experiences & knowledge with one another.

What has been one of your creative highlights?
I’m going to cheat & name a few. It would have to be being a founding member of Ballet Black which has made a huge difference in promoting diversity in ballet, Creature work in Dr Who, getting my first full Stunts contract in a Marvel film & doing the Mocap for a motor racing game …

Expand your Movement scope… New Workshop announcement! Movers & Makers: Rhythm led by @sarah_perry_movement

Sunday 30th October at Sadlers Wells.

This workshop is open to all professional movers & makers of movement; Actors, Dancers, Choreographers, Movement Directors, Directors, Animators, Musicians & more … Sarah will lead and curate the workshop, but will also invite a select number of attendees to pitch their ideas upon application to contribute to the session also; whether it be to share a solo sequence to gain feedback, to start to collaborate with another body to create, to teach a relevant exercise, movement inspired concept, lead a game/improvisation, try something new or something other to fit within the sessions chosen theme. Use your skills & share your skills, so as we learn & grow from one another. The diverse & varied skills of the group will be celebrated and hopefully we shall move and play in a multitude of ways. Some things may not work out as planned, that is ok, this is a safe place for us to move and explore together. You do not have to contribute, you can of course just move and enjoy the ride.

We offer you the space, the time and other bodies & minds to share, play, explore and discuss with.

This workshop’s theme will be RHYTHM you can take this in any way that you will, but it’s good to have at least a starting point from which to move & be inspired from.

Shapes in Motion Founder @sarah_perry_movement was recently interviewed for a creative podcast ‘Hatching Crows’ created by artist & animator @_robin_fuller_

A podcast about creativity and creative people. In each episode Robin talks to someone working in different parts of the creative industry; Animators, Filmmakers, Directors, Illustrators, Writers, Games developers & more... He wants to find out what makes them tick, what keeps them inspired and any little pieces of wisdom that he can pull from their experiences.

In this episode: ‘Be well to create well - storytelling through movement’ with Sarah Perry - Topics of conversation include her wide range of work, from blockbuster movies like Guardians of the Galaxy, to TV specials, to live streamed virtual theatre. We discuss her process for finding characterisation through movement, working with motion capture, finding space for playfulness within a creative process, and her approach to combining creative work with a wellbeing practice.
