Taking creative inspiration from our fellow creatures & learning to give a damn.

@shapesinmotion we don’t just move, improvise, embody - we study, learn & take our time to truly understand why we are moving in a certain way, appreciating where our inspiration is coming from and how we can learn from & about our fellow creatures in the process.

@sarah_perry_movement will be leading a character & creature embodiment workshop on the 25th June, focusing primarily on four key primates; gorillas, gibbons, chimpanzees & orangutans. If you are an actor, dancer, animator, mocap or physical performer … who is interested in creature studies as a source of inspiration for character & performance work, do check out our upcoming workshop.

Over the years @sarah_perry_movement has been working closely with ZSL, Zoologists & Primate specialists to research & develop a series of workshops especially for the performance industry. She is extremely passionate about conservation as much as creativity! When the two worlds meet, magic happens!

We asked Lydia a few questions, this is what she had to say;

Tell us a little bit about your performance passions:
I was very much inspired by the teachings of Grotowski and Michael Chekhov early on in my career, which shaped my approach to movement, both as a performer and teacher. What excites me is our ability to strip away the conditioning, allowing us to touch on something very raw and truthful… beyond the limitations of the mundane self… yet accessing a space so incredibly simple and pure. I get very excited when I encounter a piece of work that exemplifies this…

What are you currently working on?
Along side my work as movement tutor and mo cap coach, my career as a musician is very much taking off. I love the whole process and the creative freedom that producing my own music brings. As well as the music itself, I get to direct and produce my own music videos – giving me total creative licence to explore an idea and then experience the joy of bringing it to life!

Tell us a little bit about your experience with @shapesinmotion
I joined the troupe several years ago and it’s truly opened up many doors for me… both creatively and also regarding opportunities to work and teach in the field of Motion Capture. I’ve really appreciated having access to training and workshops with some top class directors and choreographers in the field of physical performance. It’s also a great source of support – to be a part of a troupe, in what can be a difficult road to travel on your own as an artist in this industry. Also @sarah_perry_movement expertise and grounded approach to working in this field has been invaluable to me over the years…

Seeking movement practitioners & movement teachers

Seeking movement practitioners & movement teachers from all types of movement backgrounds & styles.

We are in the midst of planning our Summer/Autumn schedule. If you are a specialist movement tutor & would be interested in teaching for us @shapesinmotion we would love to hear from you.

We are developing a range of 60-90minute wellbeing, fitness, dance & movement classes that can be offered to our movers & makers members as introductory classes, which can then have the potential to be developed into deeper dives.

In the past we have offered; #aerial #yoga #pilates #juijitsu #climbing #parkour #jazz #ballet #hiphop #stilts #hiit #cycle … to name but a few.
