039: Where Music Meets Movement: Tina Carr in Conversation

"I still feel I'm learning about how to move, as I'm indeed learning about my music. I'm finding more and more that I want to express myself with movement."

Tina Carr

In this episode of the Shapes in Motion Podcast, Sarah Perry is joined by jazz singer and lyricist Tina Carr to explore the deep connection between voice, body, and breath. Tina shares how movement shapes her unique vocal style, the influences behind her music, and how she navigates performance, wellbeing, and creative resilience. With insights into her latest album Moon Over Mildmay, this is an honest and inspiring conversation about expression, healing, and embodied artistry.

The conversation moves between the emotional depth of singing, the technical nuances of performance, and how Tina adapts her work across different spaces and audiences. She also speaks candidly about navigating pain, emotional challenges, and the ongoing balance between life and artistic practice. This episode is a thoughtful and uplifting exploration of how music, voice, and movement can connect, heal, and transform, both on and off the stage.

About Tina Carr

Tina Carr is swiftly establishing herself as one of the UK’s most compelling jazz vocalists, known for her distinctive, instantly recognisable voice and warm, authentic sound. With a smoky, full-bodied tone and a natural gift for storytelling, her performances blend intimacy, emotional honesty, and quiet confidence, earning praise for their depth, vulnerability, and individuality.

A relative latecomer to the professional music scene, Tina made a bold transition from a career working with freelance journalists to pursue the music she had long nurtured privately. Immersing herself in listening and rediscovery, she reignited her voice and quickly found her place within the jazz world.

Her acclaimed debut album Songs for Curly (2023) marked her arrival, followed by Moon Over Mildmay (2026), further cementing her reputation as a compelling interpreter and artist. Tina has performed at leading venues across London and Europe, including the EFG London Jazz Festival, where her headline shows have consistently sold out.

Collaborating with some of the UK’s most exciting jazz musicians, and working closely with pianist and arranger Matt Robinson, Tina continues to build a body of work defined by authenticity, musical sensitivity, and a deeply human connection to song.
